Bullying: Absolutely No Good

How to Use This Lesson

This is a Harmony Student Wellness lesson, a week-long, music-centered social-emotional learning lesson designed to be taught across multiple sessions, culminating in an arts-based project. Objectives

Mastery Objective

  • Students will be able to recognize bullying and identify strategies to stand up to bullying behavior.

Day 1 - Students will:

  • Listen to “Brain Damage” by Eminem
  • Identify the components of bullying behavior
  • Consider how bullying impacts people

Day 2 - Students will:

  • Listen to “Who Says” by Selena Gomez
  • Recognize that bullying can come in different forms
  • Consider how to respond to negativity

Day 3 - Students will:

  • Listen to “Ijime, Dame, Zettai” by BABYMETAL
  • Understand what it means to be assertive
  • Consider how to respond to bullying behavior in an assertive way

Day 4 - Students will:

  • Listen to “The Joke” by Brandi Carlile
  • Consider motivations for bullying behavior
  • Imagine a scenario where a bully is held accountable for their behavior

Arts-Based Activity - Students will:

  • Reflect on their personal strengths and qualities as a source of resilience
  • Create a personal coat of arms that represents their ability to stand up to bullying

Background

In this lesson, students will learn how to identify bullying and stand up against it. They will explore different forms of bullying, consider effective ways to counter it, and reflect on why people might bully others. To conclude, students will design a personal coat of arms that celebrates their strengths and serves as a reminder of their resilience.
