How to Use This Lesson
This is a Harmony Student Wellness lesson, a week-long, music-centered social-emotional learning lesson designed to be taught across multiple sessions, culminating in an arts-based project. Objectives
Mastery Objective
- Students will be able to define confidence and identify strategies for building confidence and overcoming self-doubt through group discussion, journal reflection, and poetry writing.
Day 1 - Students will:
- Listen to “The Way I am” by Charlie Puth
- Define confidence and the traits of confident people
- Dispel misunderstandings about confidence
Day 2 - Students will:
- Listen to “I Got This” by Jennifer Hudson
- Understand that confidence can be developed through certain practices
- Discuss approaches for building confidence
Day 3 - Students will:
- Watch a clip from a TED Talk by Broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph
- Determine which characteristics indicate a true role model for confidence
- Identify role models in their communities or the media who demonstrate confidence
Day 4 - Students will:
- Listen to “I Am What I Am” by Gloria Gaynor
- Define self-doubt and causes of self-doubt
- Identify strategies to combat self-doubt
Arts-Based Activity - Students will:
- Write an “I am” poem to reinforce the knowledge of their strengths and potential
- Reflect on strategies for building and maintaining self-confidence
Background
In this lesson, students will define confidence and explore strategies for building confidence including overcoming self-doubt. Students will also recognize characteristics of confidence in potential role models. Students will conclude their work by writing an “I Am” poem, which will help them articulate their capabilities and potential.
