How can recognizing when we need help and knowing how to ask for it strengthen us and those around us?
How to Use This Lesson
This is a Harmony Student Wellness lesson, a week-long, music-centered social-emotional learning lesson designed to be taught across multiple sessions, culminating in an arts-based project. Essential Question
How can recognizing when we need help and knowing how to ask for it strengthen us and those around us?
Objectives
Mastery Objective
- Students will be able to identify when they need help, ask for help effectively, and understand how they can help others.
Day 1 - Students will:
- Listen to “Put It All On Me” by Ed Sheeran feat. Ella Mai
- Reflect on the importance of seeking help
- Consider why it can sometimes be hard to ask for help
Day 2 - Students will:
- Listen to “Help!” by The Beatles
- Reflect on thoughts and emotions that signal a need for help
- Consider when help is needed and when it is not
Day 3 - Students will:
- Listen to “Help Me Out” by Maroon 5 feat. Julia Michaels
- Learn how to identify who to ask for help and how to ask
- Consider how to manage potential rejection
Day 4 - Students will:
- Listen to “People Help the People” by Birdy
- Reflect on their strengths
- Consider how they can be of help to others
Arts-Based Activity - Students will:
- Reflect on identifying the need for help and asking for help through a songwriting exercise
Background
In this lesson, students will recognize the importance of seeking help. They will reflect on thoughts that may signal the need for help, barriers that may prevent them from asking for help, and feelings that come up along the way. They will be able to identify when they need help, who they can ask, and how to ask effectively. They will also reflect on their own strengths to understand how they can help others. At the end of the lesson, students will write at least one verse of a song about asking for help.
