How to Use This Lesson

This is a Harmony Student Wellness lesson, a week-long, music-centered social-emotional learning lesson designed to be taught across multiple sessions, culminating in an arts-based project. Objectives

Mastery Objective

Students will be able to describe how to engage with digital devices and media in safe, respectful, and intentional ways.

Day 1 - Students will:

Listen to “Connection” by OneRepublic
Discuss the meaning of positive citizenship
Consider the similarities of good citizenship in person and online

Day 2 - Students will:

Listen to “Select All Delete” by John K. Samson
Consider the importance of privacy and the consequences of privacy violations
Discuss ways to protect privacy and security online

Day 3 - Students will:

Listen to “The Internet” by Oliver Tree and Little Big
Discuss strategies for respectful online interactions
Consider why people may behave differently online than they would in person

Day 4 - Students will:

Listen to “Look On Up” by Relient K
Reflect on how digital device use affects their experiences
Identify ways to make mindful decisions about device use

Arts-Based Activity - Students will:

Reflect on their experiences with digital device use and digital media
Create a mind map showing their expectations and goals for digital device and media use

Background

In this lesson, students will determine how to engage respectfully, safely, and intentionally online. They will compare digital citizenship to in-person citizenship, consider how setting and media use impact people’s behavior, and reflect on mindful technology use. They will also consider the importance of safety and privacy online and identify ways to protect themselves.
