Stronger Together: Fostering Collaboration

How to Use This Lesson

This is a Harmony Student Wellness lesson, a week-long, music-centered social-emotional learning lesson designed to be taught across multiple sessions, culminating in an arts-based project. Objectives

Mastery Objective

  • Students will be able to identify the benefits of working together and apply specific strategies to collaborate successfully with others.

Day 1 - Students will:

  • Listen to “We’re All In This Together” by the cast of High School Musical
  • Define collaboration
  • Describe the importance of collaboration

Day 2 - Students will:

  • Listen to “Let’s Work Together” by Canned Heat
  • Recognize the benefits of collaboration
  • Connect collaboration to success and wellbeing

Day 3 - Students will:

  • Listen to “I Won’t Let You Down” by OK Go
  • Compare collaboration to competition
  • Consider when to choose collaboration over competition

Day 4 - Students will:

  • Listen to “One Love” by Bob Marley
  • Consider some steps for effective collaboration
  • Reflect on collaboration by writing a poem

Arts-Based Activity - Students will:

  • Consider how collaborating on a task differs from doing that task alone
  • Collaborate with a group to create a found poem

Background

In this lesson, students will learn what collaboration is, why it matters, and how to do it. After building a shared understanding of what it means to collaborate, students will explore some of the benefits of collaboration. They will compare collaboration to competition and consider when it’s better to collaborate. Then, they will discuss some steps that they can follow to collaborate successfully.
