How to Use This Lesson
This is a Harmony Student Wellness lesson, a week-long, music-centered social-emotional learning lesson designed to be taught across multiple sessions, culminating in an arts-based project. Objectives
Mastery Objective
- Students will be able to apply strategies to their social interactions to build positive relationships.
Day 1 - Students will:
- Listen to “Everyday People” by Sly and the Family Stone
- Recognize why it is important to get along with others
- Consider how sensitivity and respect contribute to positive relationships
Day 2 - Students will:
- Listen to “Together We Rise” by Hāwane Rios
- Consider ways to show people that they are cared about
- Recognize how showing people they are cared about makes them feel comfortable
Day 3 - Students will:
- Listen to “Easy on Me” by Adele
- Understand that people have different needs in social interactions
- Consider how to ask about and communicate needs
Day 4 - Students will:
- Listen to “With a Little Help from My Friends” by The Beatles
- Acknowledge the importance of sharing and turn-taking in relationships
- Reflect on things that could be shared
Arts-Based Activity - Students will:
- Reflect on what it means to get along with others and how to do it
- Write a song about getting along with others
Background
In this lesson, students will recognize the advantages of and potential challenges to getting along with others. They will explore ways to show appreciation and respect to each other, such as using kind words and recognizing people’s needs. Students will consider how sharing and taking turns factor into getting along with others. Finally, students will write a chorus to a song about getting along with others.
