How to Use This Lesson
This is a Harmony Student Wellness lesson, a week-long, music-centered social-emotional learning lesson designed to be taught across multiple sessions, culminating in an arts-based project. Objectives
Mastery Objective
- Students will be able to practice curiosity in a variety of scenarios.
Day 1 - Students will:
- Listen to “Wonderful Life” by Zendaya
- Define curiosity
- Identify some of the benefits of curiosity
Day 2 - Students will:
- Listen to “Que Sera Sera” by Corinne Bailey Rae
- Consider the relationship between curiosity and uncertainty
- Identify some strategies for working with uncertainty
Day 3 - Students will:
- Listen to “Upside Down” by Jack Johnson
- Practice being curious about something in the classroom
- Journal about something they are curious about
Day 4 - Students will:
- Listen to “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye
- Consider how curiosity and listening are related
- Identify some questions that can help them listen actively and curiously
Arts-Based Activity - Students will:
- Reflect on how to practice curiosity
- Imagine themselves as detectives and create a story telling how they would approach a given case
Background
In this lesson, students will explore the meaning and benefits of curiosity. They will consider how to practice curiosity by learning more, exploring, listening, questioning, and investigating. Through this practice, they will recognize how curiosity can expand their perspective, increase their happiness, and positively impact their relationships. Students will apply their curiosity to a creative writing exercise, imagining themselves as detectives searching for the identity of the elusive street artist Banksy.
