Lesson
We Gon’ Be Alright: Songs of Protest and Resilience
Background
In this lesson, students will learn about collective action such as protests and connect music used in protests from the 19th and 20th centuries to music used today. They will consider the style and role of music used in the Black Lives Matter, anti-lynching, and Civil Rights movements, how music impacted people during each time period, and what they can learn about a time period by studying its music and social movements. Finally, students will relate other forms of art to music and movements by creating album art for a protest song.
